Brass Rubbing is a clean activity and provides a hands-on history lesson for the Grade 4 Social Studies unit on Medieval Times. Workshops begin with an exciting history lesson that gives a comparison of how people lived in Medieval times with life today. A discussion on diseases and unique customs of the period is also part of the curriculum. A detailed demonstration of how to create a brass rubbing is provided, and students are then able to choose from a selection of Medieval brasses for their own rubbing. A Brass Rubbing is made by covering a medieval brass with special black paper and rubbing gold or silver wax over the raised engraving until the picture appears in detail. The completed rubbing comes with a black hanger and makes a unique gift or wall hanging for the student's home. No artistic skill or training is required to complete this wonderful piece of work.
